Snell’s Mile Challenge

Cooks Gardens offers an iconic venue for runners & walkers of all ages and abilities to run / walk a Mile at the same venue that Peter Snell set the world one mile record of 3m 54.4s on the 27 January 1962.

Snell’s Mile Challenge is a community based fitness programme whereby all participants complete a Mile at Cooks Gardens on Sunday 31st January, 2021.

All finishers will receive a souvenir medal & commemorative certificate together with an official time. All entrants will also receive a free ticket to the evening session of the Cooks Classic International Track Meeting at Cooks Gardens on Saturday 30th January, 2021 commencing at 6.30pm featuring the “New Zealand One Mile Championships”.

Cooks Classic

The “Cooks Classic” on the 30th January, 2021 will feature the New Zealand One Mile Championships plus other top class events over a 2 hour action pack programme.

The cream of New Zealand’s top athletes will be competing in the following events: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, Shot Put, Hammer, Discus, Triple Jump and Discus.

The Meeting will also feature the NZ One Mile Championship for Men, last competed for in 1969. The 2nd ever NZ One Mile Championship for Women. The Men & Women 3,000m U20 NZ Championships.

La Fiesta

Running from 13 Feb to 13 March, La Fiesta is a true celebration of all that’s wonderful about women in our community. The festival programme covers everything from art, music and dance, to workshops, film screenings, meditation, food demo’s, yoga, and a whole heap of fun. It’s a great way to build confidence, get motivated, and meet awesome new people.

Downer New Zealand Masters Games

The 32nd Downer New Zealand Masters Games will be held in Whanganui from 5th – 14th February 2021.

We are pleased to confirm the Downer New Zealand Masters Games in Whanganui is full steam ahead. The team are now working hard to bring you this much loved event.

Age is no barrier to participating, the Games will host over 50+ sports and attract over 4,500 competitors aged from 18 to 95 and beyond.

Water Skills For Life Workshops

Water Safety NZ provide funding to Swimming New Zealand to provide Water Skills for Life to primary schools throughout the country. It is now the national standard for aquatic education in all New Zealand primary schools, with the focus on preventing drowning fatalities and to help kiwis develop skills to be safe in, on and around water. It is linked into the national education curriculum and gives children the skills and knowledge they need to assess risk and make smart decisions around water, providing them with the skills to survive.

Secondary school dodgeball

 

The Secondary School Dodgeball Tournament is back for 2020!

The Y.E.S.S council are going to be leading this tournament as one of their participation initiatives!

Date: Monday 24th August 2020
Time: 3.45 – 5.30pm. 3.45pm: Rules and briefing. 4:00pm: First round.
Cost: FREE

Mixed teams only – single sex schools can enter teams of one gender. Junior and Senior Grades.

4 teams per school.

There will be a junior and senior winner announced at prizegiving, and we will also be giving out spot prizes and certificates for the ‘Play of the Day’, ‘Good Sports’ Awards to individuals or teams and ‘best dressed’!
