A new Twilight Golf League for secondary school teams is up and running in Whanganui, thanks to a partnership between local clubs, Golf NZ and Sport Whanganui.

Teams from Whanganui City College, Whanganui High School, Cullinane College and Whanganui Girls’ College are taking part in the new competition, which runs weekly on Tuesday evenings from 11 March – 8 April. Each week sees a different club hosting participants, with Tawhero hosting an introductory skill session last night to kick off the series.

Paula Darlington, Sport Whanganui’s Rangatahi Lead says the new league offers participants a chance to represent their schools in a friendly interschool format, while giving students the opportunity to play at three local courses – Tawhero, Whanganui (Belmont) and Castlecliff.

“The league is designed to provide opportunities for students who may already be involved in club sports, as well as those new to the game, to represent their school in a fun and relaxed environment.

“There has been a lot of interest from schools and with positive feedback it will be run again in Term 4. We are thrilled to be partnering with these local clubs as well as Golf NZ to give local students a chance to get out and be active in a new way.”

The initiative is part of Golf NZ’s “Futures” campaign, designed to enrich the lives of young people through golf by creating experiences that inspire a lifelong love of the game. Golf NZ will also be supplying essential items like balls, tees, and scorecards, as well as offering spot prizes throughout the series.

Janette Smith from Golf NZ says “trying a new sport can be quite scary for young people so this is a great opportunity for them to get on a course and discover that golf can be fun! It’s also nice to have collaboration between the Clubs, this doesn’t happen often, and each Club has something different to offer.”

The twilight series will see teams of four students, accompanied by an adult or teacher, compete in an Ambrose-style format, which ensures that players of all skill levels can participate together. The competition will conclude with the overall winning team for the series being crowned.
