2024 Mini Ball Rules, Regulations and Format

All Grades
Safety Rules
• Each team will be allowed to bring 1 ball into the stadium for warming up purposes. Any other balls bought into the stadium will be confiscated and can be collected at the end of the evening
• No jewellery is to be worn by players.
• Mouth guards are mandatory NO MOUTH – GUARD NO PLAY
Fair Play Rules
• All players, coaches, whanau, and supporters are asked to encourage all players in any team to participate to the best of their ability.
• Referees are encouraged to support and coach the teams especially in the Junior grade.
• Players who are verbally abusive to referees will be asked to leave the court.
• Coaches or spectators who are abusive to referees or players will be asked to leave the stadium.
Player Eligibility
• All players must attend a primary school (up to School Year 6).
• Mini ball teams can be mixed or single sex.
• All players must be registered on the team entry form and scoresheet
Game Play
• Size 5 basketball will be used for all mini ball games.
• A game will be deemed default when the opposing team cannot take the court within the first five minutes, in this instance the defaulting team will be deemed as the losing team.
• A team can take the court with 4 correctly dressed and eligible players.
• Man to man defence must be played.
• In the event of a tied game, play will not continue.
• Each team is allowed 1 x 30 second time outs per half however no time outs are allowed in the last 2 minutes of any half. Time outs will not be permitted in an overtime period.
• When a final has resulted in a tied game an overtime period is played once only, the clock is re-set for 5 minutes, no break is allowed before overtime, the overtime will commence with a jump ball. When the overtime period has resulted in a tied game a jump ball will resume play, the first team to score will be deemed the winners.
• All teams will be required to provide one person to score bench their own games and must provide a referee.
• Foul shots – shooter can be moved closer, at the discretion of the referee, to take the shot.
Game Format
Game times will consist of 2 x 10 minute halves.
• Clocks will not be reset and will run on time.
Points Allocation
Winning teams will be awarded 3 points.
• Losing teams are awarded 0 points.
• Tied games – each team will be awarded 1 point.
Uniforms
Numbered uniforms are compulsory for the all grades.
• All teams are expected to wear the exact same uniform colour tops and bottoms.
• Long hair must be tied up and hooked up so refs can clearly see the players’ numbers.
• No hats, caps or beanies are to be worn in a game.
• Shoes must be worn at all times – non-marking shoes
Coloured arm bands are worn to help understand the man-to-man situation
• Back over half penalty will apply.
• 3 second penalty will not apply.
• To encourage children to attempt to shoot the ball, defenders will not be allowed to shot block, defenders will be encouraged to ‘stand tall’, stand straight up and down with arms vertical in the air.
When a basket has been scored, the scoring team must drop back to the ¾ line to allow the opposing team to bring the ball up the court.
