All Ability Athletics Day grows in numbers

We were thrilled to celebrate the second annual Mitre 10 MEGA Whanganui All Ability Athletics Day on Wednesday, 11 March. Based on traditional athletics days but with a twist, this inclusive event empowers young people with disabilities to take part in physical activity in ways that best suit them.

This year saw 100 tamariki and rangatahi participate, up from around 70 last year. Students were well supported by teachers and staff from their schools, community volunteers and Max from the Halberg Foundation as well as Sport Whanganui staff.

Sport Whanganui Disability & Inclusion Lead, Sarah Craig, says the event is designed to ensure every participant feels welcomed and supported.

“The All-Ability Day is about creating a space where everyone can take part, have fun and try new sports and physical activities in a way that suits their individual needs and preferences.”

The programme was split into two sessions – primary school tamariki in the morning, followed by secondary school rangatahi in the afternoon. Participants rotated through jumping and throwing activities, running and wheelchair races, and a fun rubber chicken relay.

So many smiles, laughs, and moments of pure fun – well done to everyone who came along and gave it a go!
