Kaitohutohu Pāpāho – Communications Advisor
Do you love creating content that genuinely connects with people? Sport Whanganui is looking for a creative and community-minded Communications Advisor to help tell our story through engaging campaigns, digital content, media, and reporting that reflects the real impact of our mahi. This is a role that would suit someone with 1-2 years’ experience in a similar position, or a savvy recent graduate keen to learn and grow their skills.
You will be based in our Whanganui office, with hours negotiable between 32-40 hours per week and a salary range of $65,000 – $75,000.

About the role
The Kaitohutohu Pāpāho – Communications Advisor delivers high-quality communications and marketing activity that promote Sport Whanganui’s programmes, events and impact. This role works closely with all other members of the Sport Whanganui team to bring campaigns and content to life and promote best practice.
As the Communications Advisor, you will use your skills, and influence to:
- Design and deliver engaging written and visual communications across multiple platforms.
- Manage and maintain social and digital media channels, ensuring brand voice and engagement is consistent with the Sport Whanganui communication strategy.
- Support organisational storytelling through proactive content creation and impactful reporting, including contributing to the design and production of the annual report.
- Assist with insights gathering processes, including workshops, surveys and post-event analysis and reporting.
- Support teams to design and produce quality on-brand materials using Canva and other digital design tools and software.
About you
You’re a creative and organised communicator who enjoys turning ideas, programmes, and outcomes into clear, engaging stories that connect with people.
You’ll combine excellent planning and problem-solving skills with an empathetic and encouraging approach. Practical and solution focused, you are an excellent listener and are comfortable providing advice.
Your skills and experience ideally include:
- Excellent written, oral and visual communication skills
- Tertiary qualification (degree-level) in communications, journalism, or marketing
- Graphic design skills and an excellent attention to detail
- A commitment to upholding the principles Te Tiriti o Waitangi
- Previous experience in New Zealand sport, government or non-profit sectors highly valued.
- A valid New Zealand driver’s license.
