Green Prescription (GRx) is a free service aiming to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals, and whānau through movement/physical activity and nutrition support.

How we support you

GRx supports whānau towards achieving their healthy lifestyle goals through resources, information, removal of barriers and creating sustainable lifestyle changes. Our aim is to help you and your whānau move forward with confidence on your healthy lifestyle journey.

This is achieved through movement and healthy food advice based on your individual needs, but could also include:

  • Regular follow-ups for up to 6 months
  • Healthy eating and physical activity resources and support
  • Goal-setting
  • Community connection

Whether you are just starting out on your personal health journey or looking to make positive changes for your whānau, the GRx team can help.

“Adding more physical activity and better eating to your life can start with small steps and it doesn’t have to hurt the pocket. We work with what clients have available and what is free or affordable in the community.”

Sport Whanganui GRx Team

How does GRx work?

Being active and eating a balanced diet assists brain development and improves mood. It also helps to build resilience, become fitter, boost your wellbeing and decrease stress. Our team works together with you individually, or with your whānau to develop a plan that suits your needs.

We offer three programmes:

  • Active Families is a fantastic way for young families (including youth from 7- 17 years old) to work together to improve lifestyle habits.
  • Active Adults & Active Teens are community connected. Our team will support you along your hauora (health) journey, working with you to create a plan with appropriate exercises, goal setting, basic healthy eating advice and resources.

How can I get involved?

Ask your GP, practice nurse or healthcare professional to make a referral. Sport Whanganui’s GRx team accepts referrals for whānau living across the wider Whanganui region, including Whanganui, Rangitīkei and Ruapehu districts. Once referred, our team will contact you to arrange a consultation.

Alternatively, you can refer yourself by contacting the Green Prescription team at Sport Whanganui, by phoning 06 3492325 or 06 3492328.
