Healthy Active Learning Community Connector
Sport Whanganui is seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join our team as a Healthy Active Learning Community Connector. This exciting role plays a pivotal role in the implementation of Healthy Active Learning regionally.
As a Community Connector, you will work directly with Healthy Active Learning Schools/Kura, and their local communities to foster environments that promotes quality play, sport, and physical activity for tamariki. You will build strong, meaningful relationships and collaborate with schools and community providers to co-design and deliver engaging physical activity experiences both in and outside of school settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with schools, kura, and community organisations to promote holistic wellbeing through physical activity.
- Support the development and implementation of quality play, sport, and active recreation initiatives.
- Facilitate community engagement and build sustainable partnerships.
- Champion inclusive and diverse approaches to physical activity for tamariki.
What we are looking for;
We are seeking someone who brings a mix of passion, experience, and practical skills to the table. You will ideally have:
- A strong passion for the holistic wellbeing of tamariki and a belief in the power of physical activity.
- Experience in community engagement and programme development, particularly in sport, active recreation, education, or a related field.
- A background in working with primary and intermediate schools and/or kura.
- The ability to plan, coordinate, and implement high-quality play, sport, and physical activity opportunities.
- Knowledge of how the education and sport sectors interact to support tamariki.
- An understanding of school systems, structures, and decision-making processes.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Strong organisational skills, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
This role is based in either the Rangitikei or Whanganui Districts and involves regular travel within the region.

About the role
The Before & After School (BAS) Programme Assistant/Driver is a key member of the Whanganui Boys and Girls Gym Club team, planning and delivering activities as part of the new BAS Programme launching in Term 2 2025.
You’ll be tasked with building positive relationships with the children taking part in the programme, as well as their schools/kura and whānau. Perhaps the most important part of your role is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the tamariki while they are in your care.
As the BAS Programme Assistant/Driver, you will use your organisational skills and experience to:
- Plan, manage and deliver a broad range of activities for children aged 5-13 years old.
- Develop and nurture relationships with programme participants, schools and kura.
- Use feedback and observations to identify opportunities to adapt and modify activities as required.
- Actively and positively contribute to the growth and development of the BAS Programme.
About you
You are a confident communicator with excellent organisational skills and an adaptive, action-oriented mindset. You are a natural at establishing and nurturing strong, effective relationships, and your skills and experience include:
- Qualifications and/or experience working with tamariki.
- Ability to work well within a team environment and stay calm in stressful situations.
- A strong commitment to safety and providing safe and welcoming environments for children and young people.
- A valid full New Zealand driver’s license for at least two years.
- A ‘P’ license is desirable but not mandatory.
- A commitment to and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and knowledge of tikanga, te reo and Te Ao Maori.

The Whanganui Boys & Girls Gym Club (WBGGC) is a non-profit charitable organisation, owned by Sport Whanganui and affiliated to Gymnastics New Zealand. The club offers competitive and recreational gymnastics as well as pre-school classes, cheerleading, trampoline, and school holiday programmes.
