Junior Hockey Grades
The Rangitīkei Hockey Association offers winter field hockey competitions for children in Years 1–8, providing opportunities for players of all abilities to develop their skills, build confidence, and enjoy being part of a team.
Fun Sticks (Years 1–2)
Fun Sticks is an introductory programme held later in the hockey season at Rangitīkei College Turf. Players take part in a shorter five-week programme, focusing on basic skills, fun activities, and short friendly games in a supportive environment.
Mini Sticks (Years 3–4)
Mini Sticks is played on Saturday mornings at Rangitīkei College Turf. This grade introduces players to the game through modified rules and age-appropriate competition, helping them develop fundamental hockey skills while having fun.
Kiwi Sticks (Years 5–6)
Kiwi Sticks is played on Thursday and Friday afternoons/evenings at Huntley School Turf, Hunterville Turf, and Rangitīkei College Turf. This grade provides players with their first experiences of more structured competition while continuing to emphasise skill development, teamwork, and enjoyment of the game.
Kwik Sticks (Years 7–8)
Kwik Sticks is played on Thursday or Friday evenings at Rangitīkei College Turf, or on Friday afternoons/evenings at Feilding High School Turf. This grade builds on players’ existing skills and prepares them for the transition into secondary school hockey through a more competitive format.
Lower North Island Festival (Years 7–8)
Year 7–8 players have the opportunity to take part in the Lower North Island Festival, held annually in late September.
Any player in this age group who wishes to participate can opt in to join a festival team. Players who register will attend additional training sessions in the lead-up to the festival before travelling with the team to compete against other hockey associations from across the Lower North Island.
The festival is a wonderful opportunity for players to further develop their hockey skills, enjoy the experience of travelling as part of a team, make new friends, and have fun competing against teams from other regions.
