The Taumarunui community embraced the recent Fastest Kid on the Block event. The finals were hosted by Sport Whanganui. Taumarunui Youth and Community Trust have partnered with Sport Whanganui to help assist in sport, recreation and cultural activities across the Taumarunui community and this series was a great example of the success of this partnership.
Overall the event saw five neighborhoods and 3 regions competing for the title of the Fastest Kid on the Block. Along with Taumarunui, Taihape and Rangitikei held their heats at their local Christmas Parade in December and the grand final took place at Cooks Garden in conjunction with the Cooks Garden Classic on the 23rd of January.
For the Taumarunui community the day was a great success, not only because of the results achieved but the opportunity this event gave them. The children and families made the most of it to showcase the culture and talent of ‘little old Taurmarunui’. Amy Perez, Manager of TYCT says “Seeing the looks on children’s faces when they crossed the finish line was priceless, also watching the parents realise our local kids have some speed and skills”.
The Cooks Classic took place after the Fastest Kid on the Block races which was a Commonwealth Games qualifying event which gave the participants a chance to watch firsthand top New Zealand athletes in action. Many of the events showcased at this high-profile event are not offered in Taumarunui due to limited resource so being able to watch this was a great exposure for the children, “Our kids were in ore of watching them, one day we hope to offer our kids the equipment and resources to offer things such as high jump, triple jump and hurdles at our local athletics”, says Manager of the TYCT Amy Perez.
Overall it was great event for all and a true example of the positive work the collaboration between the Taumarunui Youth Community Trust and Sport Whanganui brings. The partnership will continue to grow and develop to achieve TCYTs goals and vision for the future.
